Dangerous state of the fisherman's footpath at West Newport where a fatal accident occurred last week - a moral responsibility on the Commissioners - ? erect a fence at the side - examine the footpath first. [Courier 5 Sep 1899] |
Fatal accident last weekend: something should be done to protect users of the path. It was an old fishers' road that could not be shut. For £2 a fence could be put up. Miss Just, one of the proprietors concerned, wanted the path closed. Provost said there were too many closed places already & he would be against this. Matter deferred. [Advertiser 5 Sep 1899]. [In the Advertiser 28 Aug 1899 it was described as happening at the Western Braes, Newport as Robert Allan was going down the steep footpath behind Just's property and slipped, falling onto the rocks about 20 feet below. At the same spot an elderly woman almost lost her life several years ago.] |
Agreed to erect a fence at the dangerous path at the West Braes following the fatal accident. Also, following the recent narrow escape to a child, suggested to the Railway Company that at the approach of trains the gates be bolted, and that the bridge be brought to the gates with access to it from the platforms. [Advertiser 3 Oct 1899] |
Propose extending the improvements to Kirk Road up to Alpine Cottage and widen it a little behind the houses with Mr Berry's consent. The road now shows a vast improvement. [Advertiser 3 Oct 1899] |
Mr H Pattullo, treasurer, gave his report. Rates for the following year: for general purposes 9d. per £ as at present; for roads 5d. divided equally between owners and tenants as last year; for drainage 4d per £. The capital sum borrowed at the start of the drainage scheme had been considerably repaid. For roads, £75 had been spent on making good Kirk Road and there had been no further call on ratepayers for this. The commissioners' debt in Newport is very very small. [Advertiser 3 Oct 1899] |
Retiring: Provost Andrew Leitch (not seeking re-election), Bailie Thomas Roger, and Mr Henry A Pattullo (retiring after 6 years as he is moving to Dundee). [Advertiser 3 Oct 1899] |
