The Newport, Wormit & Forgan Archive

Part of a Plan of Scotscraig Estate by John Hope, 1769, georeferenced

This is a tracing of a map which covers the area of East Newport. It has been warped slightly in the process of georeferencing it to the actual ground.

The tracing is of part of a copy, made in 1954, of a plan of Scotscraig, the property of James Dalgleish, which was surveyed by John Hope in 1769. The original plan is believed to be in Dundee City Archives, the 1954 copy is in St Andrews University Library Special Collections. I took this tracing from the copy several years ago.

By adjusting the opacity of the maps, the 1769 ground layout can be superimposed on current mapping or an aerial view.

The map shows the land divided into fields, some of them named, their quality described, and their sizes given in acres. There are also 6 numbered pendicles near the river. A pendicle is a small piece of land regarded as subsidiary to the main estate (Dictionaries of the Scots Language). A few buildings are shown - Newport House, Seacraig, Kempstone and Craighead. The march is the boundary between Scotscraig and Inverdovat.
