Directories

A directory of Newport and (later) Wormit appears in the Dundee Directory in 1834, 1853, and from 1867 to 1974. There is a complete run of this publication at the Local History Centre, Dundee Central Library. National directories (e.g. those by Slater, Pigot and McDonald) also have sections for Newport or Forgan.

All known directories have been included here, giving complete coverage from 1825 to 1974, when the Dundee publication ceased. There are over 125900 entries in this database.

Directories usually list only the head of the household (rather like present-day telephone directories). However, not every householder is included, as the entries had to be paid for.

Directory entries are always in alphabetical order by surname, with the surname given first. The surname may or may not be followed by a comma; don't search for "J Mudie" but for starts with Mudie and contains J .
