Special Constables 1914 - 1920
Source: Newport Town Council Minutes 1913 - 1920, B79/1/13-19.
The special constables were enrolled as a volunteer force, consisting of persons who, being unable to undertake military service, were desirous of rendering useful service to their country in the maintenance of public order.
In 1914 Newport Town Council resolved to try to get 40 Special Constables because of the war crisis. On 25th August 1914, 30 were appointed. During the course of the war, some of them left the district or joined the forces, and additional ones were appointed, raising the force to 35 men.
The men are listed here in the order they were enrolled.
