1851 Census
Commentary on the 1851 census of Forgan parish
Enumeration District 1 - Newport : The Enumerator's Walk. Present-day locations in italics. The route can be followed using the 'view all 1851 address records' option on the 1851 page.
Marytown: Starting in Tay Street at its corner with James Street, goes west along Tay Street, up the lower part of Robert Street to Seacraig House (demolished, site of Seacraig Court), up to Queen Street, along to Meldrum Square (top of Robert Street), west along King Street, east along Union Street and then west along the remaining part of Tay Street. Jump to west half of Queen Street, along to Gowrie Street and finish at the Toll House (demolished, Cupar Road opposite the end of Blyth Street).
Newport: This is the most difficult route to follow, given the almost total lack of address information. It starts at the top of the High Street, goes down to the area around the old pier (Granary Lane), then to the area around the Ferry pier, then west along West Road. At present, I am uncertain of the location of the last 7 schedules in this area.
Woodhaven: Starts at the bend in the road (St. Fort Road / Riverside Road) and goes westwards.
Conventions used in this transcription
Any material not part of the original, is enclosed in [square brackets].
Schedule numbers: In Enumeration District 1, the enumerator used 4 separate sequences of schedule numbers - for the rural area, Marytown, Newport and Woodhaven villages. I have preceded the Marytown schedule numbers with [M], the Newport schedule numbers with [N], and the Woodhaven schedule numbers with [W].
Houses: Each house was terminated with a long line and therefore started with the terminating long line of the previous house. Within each house, each household was separated from other occupiers by a short line. In this transcription, to have consistency across the whole site, the long line has been transcribed as a double stroke (//) and the short line as a single stroke (/). The strokes are shown in the Household View after the address information, where both starting and ending strokes are given for each household. In the address records listings, only the ending strokes are shown. An explanation of the combinations of / and // is given on the abbreviations page.
