1871 Census

Commentary on the 1871 census of Forgan registration district

The Enumerator's Walks. The routes can be followed using the 'view all 1871 address records' option on the 1871 page. Present-day locations in italics.

Enumeration District 3 - West Newport : Start at the South Lodge of Tayfield (opposite Newport Primary School) down Cupar Road (north and west sides) to the old Granary (now demolished, at top of High Street), down High Street, Old Pier Road (Granary Lane), then the area round the pier, up Pier Head Road (Boat Brae), along Tayside (West Road north side) as far as Wellgate House. Jump back to Rosebank House (8 Shepherds Road) then take in all the houses in Woodmuir (Crescent and Terrace) and then go west along the south side of West Road to the Castle, and then up Castle Brae. Two misplaced schedules are listed at the end.

Enumeration District 4 - East Newport : This can be easily followed using the street names given. St Phillans Place is now Cupar Road, east side; Tayview Road is now Tayview Terrace; Meldrum Square is the group of houses at the south-east end of Robert Street, between King Street and Queen Street; James Square is the block on Gowrie Street between King Street and Queen Street. The walk finishes at Gowrie Street and Woodside Terrace (Woodbine Terrace).

Enumeration District 5 - T.S. 'Mars' : I have split this into 3 schedules: Captain Scott's family, the staff, and the boys.

Conventions used in this transcription

Any material not part of the original, is enclosed in [square brackets].

Houses: Each house was terminated with a double stroke (//) and therefore started with the terminating double stroke of the previous house. Within each house, each household was separated from other occupiers by a single stroke(/). In this transcription, the strokes are shown in the Household View after the address information, where both starting and ending strokes are given for each household. In the address records listings, only the ending strokes are shown. An explanation of the combinations of / and // is given on the abbreviations page.

Married women: Some married women also gave their maiden names. To be consistent across the whole site, I have listed them by their maiden surname followed by their married surname in [square brackets]. Several women gave their surnames as 'x or y'. They have been listed here with both names, neither in brackets.
