1871 Census
About the 1871 census
The 1871 census was taken on the night of Sunday 2 April, 1871. The following information was gathered:
- Number of schedule (allocated consecutively from 1 in each enumeration district)
- Name of street, place, road, etc.
- House number or name
- Whether a house was inhabited, uninhabited or being built
- Name of every living person who had spent the night in that house
- Relationship of person enumerated to the head of the family
- Person's marital status
- Age at last birthday (sex is indicated by which column the age is recorded in)
- Person's rank, profession, or occupation
- Person's place of birth - county and place (if outside of Scotland, only the country may be given)
- Whether blind, or deaf and dumb, or imbecile, or lunatic
- Number of children from 5 to 13 who were in regular attendance at school, or were in the receipt of education at home under tutors or governesses (not transcribed here)
- Number of rooms with one or more windows
- Lodgers and separate occupiers were to be given a separate schedule. Boarders were to be included in the main household, but were separated on the enumeration book by a single stroke.

The parish was split into 5 Enumeration Districts:
Enumeration District 1
The northern boundary of this enumeration district extends from the South Lodge of Tayfield westwards to Newport Castle (opposite Pluck the Crow Point) and thence along the sea coast to Wormit Bay. Along the boundary line are Pluck the Crow, Fishers Cottage, the small village of Woodhaven and Scroggieside.
The farms of Wormit & Newton form the western boundary and separate the parishes of Forgan and Balmerino. The farms and the cottar houses are the only houses along this line.
The southern boundary extends from Newton Hill east to Bogton, the houses of which on the north side only belong to Forgan and form part of the boundary between Forgan and Kilmany. The southern boundary is continued from Bogton by the south of the Links & Morendy Woods separating Forgan, Leuchars & Logie and meeting the southern extremity of the eastern boundary close to, but not including, Pickletillum.
The eastern boundary of this district extends along the main road leading from Leuchars to Newport from Comerton houses and includes along the line St Fort Smithy & Forgan Schoolhouse and ends where the northern begins at the South Lodge of Tayfield.
In the centre of the district are St Fort House & servants' houses connected therewith, the farms & cottar houses of Wester Friarton, South Friarton and Flass, Seggieden, Tayfield Mains & Waterstone Crook.

Enumeration District 2
The northern boundary of this district extends from James Street east of Newport along the seacoast to Greenside Scalp opposite Seacraig Turnpike and thence along the east march of the farm of Northfield, Craiglaw & Scotscraigburn to a little south of Ferry-port-on-Craig Turnpike. The houses near the boundary line are (1) along the coast - Craighead Cottages, Northfield Farm & Cottar houses; (2) opposite Craiglaw - Cliff Terrace, Chesterhill & Knowehead.
The eastern boundary is Morton Estate in Forgan parish, between Forgan, Ferry-port-on-Craig and Leuchars, extending to the farms of Ninewells & Kirtonbarns. The houses along the boundary are Morton Farm & cottar houses, Ninewells, Burnside, Kirtonbarns & Lawhouses.
The southern boundary passes along the north of Cowbakie Hill and Craigiehill to the turnpike road from Leuchars to Newport. The houses near the line are Cauldhame, Forgan Manse, Myreside & Easter Friarton.
The western boundary of this district is the eastern boundary of District 1 extending from the south of Tayfield along by Newport but not including any part of it as far as James Street, the western point of the northern boundary of this district. The houses along this line are Old Schoolhouse & Tayfield Smithy.
In the centre of this enumeration district are the farms & cottar houses of Inverdovat, Causewayhead & Roseberry.

Enumeration District 3
This enumeration district comprises the western half of the village of Newport commonly called West Newport, and Tayfield. Its northern boundary is the Firth of Tay and extends from Newport Toll Bar & the Granary opposite, to Westgate Cottage [should be Wellgate House]. Its western boundary extends from Westgate Cottage to Waterstone Crook. Its southern boundary extends from Waterstone Crook along the Kirk Road & main road to Newport as far as Causewayhead Road. Its eastern boundary is the main road down to Newport Toll Bar.
With the exception of Tayfield House and Westwood House, the houses in this district are close together and commonly known as Tayside.
Estimated number of families: 130. Estimated length x breadth: 1/4 mile x 1/4 mile.

Enumeration District 4
This enumeration district comprises the whole of Easter Newport. Its northern boundary is the Firth of Tay. Its western boundary is the same as the eastern boundary of district 3. Its eastern boundary is the western boundary of district 2. Its southern boundary is the north boundary of district 2 as far as Causewayhead Road.
It consists of Hillside Crescent, St Phillans Place, Tay Street, Union Street, King Street, Queen Street, William Street, Robert Street, Meldrum Square, Bellevue Crescent, Prospect Terrace, Woodbine Terrace, James Street and other houses eastward recently erected.
