1881 Census
About the 1881 census
The 1881 census was taken on the night of Sunday 3 April, 1881. The following information was gathered:
- Number of schedule (allocated consecutively from 1 in each enumeration district)
- Name of street, place, road, etc.
- House number or name
- Whether a house was inhabited, uninhabited or being built
- Name of each living person that had spent the night in that house
- Relationship of person enumerated to the head of the family
- Person's marital status
- Age at last birthday (sex is indicated by which column the age is recorded in)
- Person's rank, profession, or occupation
- Person's place of birth - county and place (if outside of Scotland, only the country may be given)
- Whether deaf-and-dumb, blind, imbecile or idiot, lunatic
- Number of rooms with one or more windows
- Is Gaelic spoken?
- A separate house is now defined as '(1) every dwelling with a distinct outside entrance from a street, court, lane or road, etc., or (2) with a door opening directly into a common stair; but any such dwelling if subdivided and occupied by different families, is reckoned only as a single house'. For the first time compared with previous Scottish censuses, this recognised common stairs and tenements as being split into separate houses.
- Lodgers and separate occupiers are given their own schedules and separated from other occupiers in the same house by a single stroke.
The remainder of this page is transcribed in full from the census returns.
