Published information from the censuses of 1801, 1811, 1821 & 1831 is purely statistical.
Information about the number of houses, the number of families and the broadest of occupation groupings was given. They also record the number of males and females.
In the occupation groupings, the 1801 return refers to Persons in each of the groups. The total number of Persons equals the total number of males.
In later years Persons is changed to Families and the total equals the total number of families.

There was an earlier counting of the population of Scotland - Webster's 'Account of the Population of Scotland in 1755' - undertaken by the parish ministers. This recorded a population of 751 for Forgan parish. Copy at National Records of Scotland.
