Newport Town Council, Gas Statistics, 1925 - 1949

The Newport Gas Light Company started manufacturing gas at its works in the High Street in 1856 (1). In 1897 the Company opened a new gasholder on the Tayport Road site. The Council bought over the Company on 5 August 1901. A new gasworks was opened on the Tayport Road in 1903. The Council's gas operation ceased on 30 April 1949 as a result of nationalisation (2). The gas was used for street lighting, and was sold for domestic and commercial uses.
