A difficult block to allocate precisely. Ground floor had originally a workshop and house, later 2 houses of 2 rooms each; middle floor had one of 2 rooms and one of 3 rooms; top floor had one of 2 rooms and one of 3 rooms. Allocation of inhabitants is consistent from 1925 back to 1889 and is helped by directory entries, but uncertainties exist both before and after these dates. The 1964 renumbering is a complete mix-up. | formerly 48, Union Street | Location |

There was a house on this site from at least 1802. The Fife Herald, 27 Jan 1825, p5 col 4 - refers to Mr Berry's new cottage as being a little west of the starting point of the new access road to the ferry pier. This would give a date of c.1824. There is a building labelled Abercraig on a map of 1837, but it is not the same shape as the current building. John Gifford The Buildings of Scotland - Fife gives a definite date of 1840. Also, there are records of a load of Kingoodie stone for doors and corners plus Dunkeld slates to be shipped to Newport harbour in 1838/39 for a house in Newport on the Tayfield estate. I surmise that this is the third house on the site, built 1840, replacing an earlier house built c1824, which in turn replaced an earlier house. | 2 West Road | Location |
Robert Just owned 5 properties at The Terrace and 8 at Woodend. His listings in the Valuation Rolls are frequently mixed up and untangling them has proved a challenge. People did move between the properties, which adds to the difficulties. Some directory entries remain unanswered. | 19 West Road | Location |

A building (Hope Cottage), subdivided into 3 or 4, was on the site by 1858. It was extended by 1864, probably to its final size. Internal divisions complicate the picture. | Matthewson's Land [1], William Street | Location |
